Monthly Program:  "Detroit's Mount Olivet Cemetery"

featuring: Michigan Author, Cecile Wendt Jensen
Tuesday, June 18th @ 6:30 p.m.

Michigan author, Cecile Wendt Jensen, will present a program on "Detroit's Mount Olivet Cemetery."  The Cemetery celebrates its 125th year in 2013.  Ms. Jensen has taught in public schools for 30 years in traditional and electronic art, art history, and social studies.  She is a certified genealogist and the author of books on cemeteries, Polonia, and genealogy.

This program will take place on Tuesday, June 18th at 6:30 pm in Erin Auditorium.  The public is welcome and refreshments will be served.

"Wartime Memories of a Tin Can Sailor"

Kermit Beverly’s story is the story of thousandsKermit Beverly of men who served in the Navy during WWII.   During his tour of duty, 1939-1945, Mr. Beverly was on DD-199 U.S.S. Dallas (Clemson Class),  DD-451 U.S.S. Chevalier (Fletcher Class), and DD-744 U.S.S. Blue (Sumner Class).  The Dallas was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation and 4 battle stars, the Chevalier 3 battle stars, and the Blue was awarded 6 battle stars for WWII service.

We have a very limited number of copies of Beverly's book remaining and have no plans to reprint this title.  To have a copy sent to you, print out the order form and mail to the address listed.  The cost of the book is $13.00 if you would like it shipped, or $10.00 if picked up at the library. 


Lost Landscapes of Detroit

This compilation of various public domain video clips of Detroit was put together by Rick Prelinger and presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit on Feb. 10, 2010. It shows Detroit from 1917 - 1970. Perhaps some of the scenes will be familiar. The entire video is over an hour.



About Us 

The Society offers programs every third Tuesday in the Library's Erin Auditorium every month throughout the year (except for July, August and December). Our speakers provide entertaining and informative presentations on local history and genealogy. Check the library calendar for information on each month's event. Our programs are open to the public with refreshments following the program. RHGS also sponsors genealogy workshops on an on-going basis; information on these workshops can also be found on the library calendar.
